"Friends the television show is like a leak we never fixed. A leak that gradually became a torrent pouring through the living room and ruined our furniture.

In its earlier days it was a relatively amusing comedy from the US which was televised maybe once a week. But over time it started being run in double bills, marathon broadcasts and eventually became a reliable fixture that was never not being broadcast. It became the norm to turn on the TV and be greeted by these greasy haired men and increasingly emaciated women going about their comical business.

In some ways our willingness to watch these characters opened the door to watching “real people” locked inside a house. Our willingness to watch these types of people endlessly led to a new TV channel being created. A channel that would broadcast live footage of people sleeping, reading books, sunbathing, and eating. In between this“reality” they would fill the schedule with more Friends. It became normal that you could turn on the TV at any time and see episodes like “The One With The Fish”, “The One Where Monica Kills Again” and “The One Where Joey Swallows a Tennis Ball”.

In time, these fictional New Yorkers achieved their goal and began to occupy the same space in our minds and memories that we usually reserve for knowledge of our “real” friends. We became used to staring at a screen, either unaware of or unconcerned with, our own disconnection to the events we saw – and assumed that they were for our own amusement.

Now I follow David Schwimmer on instagram and wonder:
Why can't I remember my own brother's name?
